Classroom Happenings

April 11, 2016

We have a field trip on April 28 to FSCJ to watch the Frog Prince.  We will not require any chaperones as there are no tickets available.  Look for field trip forms in their folders.

We will be going to the zoo in May, and we would love to have chaperones for that field trip.

Please remember to check and send in folder daily.  It is our way of keeping you informed of what is going on in the classroom.

Reading

We have been doing an in-depth study of vertebrates.  So far this year we have studied fish, amphibians, and reptiles.  We will be studying birds for the next couple of weeks.  We will learn about the different parts of the birds and characteristics that make birds unique from other vertebrate classes as well as adaptations that they have.  We are using the information and using it in our writing.  Don't forget to ask your child about the 4 different types of birds (perching, raptor, water bird and ground dwelling bird) and an example of each.

Math

We are learning to compose and decompose numbers up to 10.  Many kids are already counting beyond 25, and they are also recognizing their teen numbers.  Ask them how many tens and ones are in each number.  Continue to practice counting to 100 by 10s and 5s.  We are also learning the names of coins and their values.  Try letting your children name the coins that you receive as change.  We are solving word problems and determining what operation to use to solve it.

Science & Culture

In science we are learning about birds.  We will be studying the different parts of birds.  We will look at the different parts of the bird and explore its function and how its appearance is usually a clue to how the bird species uses it.  We will learn the names of different birds and special characteristics of each one.  We will then explore penguins in depth.  Our study of penguins will coincide with a study of Antarctica.  There is more to Antarctica than just penguins.  we will end our unit study on Antarctica with a day of science experiments on May 6.

The kids love to sing the continent song.  It goes like this:

Tell me the continents
Tell me the continents
Tell me if you can.
North America, South America,
Africa, Europe, and Asia
Don't forget Australia
Don't forget Antarctica
Tell me the continents
Tell me the continents
Tell me if you can
