Anatomy & Physiology:

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop understanding of the relationships between the structures and functions of the human body. In order to achieve this purpose we will cover a wide array of topics. These topics will include, but are not limited to: the organization of the body, biochemistry, cells, tissues, and the structure and function of the major organ systems. Due to the nature of the course, medical applications will be integrated into lessons via classroom activities, laboratory experiences, laboratory practicals, dissections (which will include vertebrates), and field trips.
*This is a vocabulary intensive course. For success in the class, it is imperative that students have a full understanding of all anatomical terms covered in class. This will even require that sometimes students must learn and review the terms before they are covered in class.

*PLEASE NOTE: Labs are not able to be made up due to the nature of them. If a student misses a lab, the student will be required to write a 5 page essay on an appropriate topic from the lab missed. The essay may be 1.5 spaced, include a title which may be size 20 font, and the typed portion of the paper, which can include resources all at 12 font.

Forensic Science:

Forensic science is the application of scientific and technological principles and techniques to answer legal questions and solve crimes.  In this course, we will explore such topics as: fingerprinting, hair and fiber examination, DNA analysis, blood typing and blood spatter, toxicology, ballistics, forgery, and death.  Overall, the most important aspect of forensic science is the proper and ethical observation, analysis, collection, recording, and processing of evidence.  Thus, as a laboratory class focusing on these skills, forensic science will require you to engage in a great deal of collaborative hands-on activities, labs, and projects.  Finally, keeping with the mission of Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School, School of the Medical Arts, the medical aspects of forensic science will be an over-arching focal point for this course.
