What is Happening in Room 423 Week of April 18, 2016

Reading:
This week we will be using two articles:  “How to save the Tiger” and “Do Bears still need help?” We will read and discuss the articles, annotate, use context to determine the meaning of the unknown words, and answer text dependent questions.
On days 1 and 2, we will use “How to save the Tiger” and on days 3 and 4, we will use “Do Bears still need help?” On Day 5, we will use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast the 2 articles.

Math:
Math 3rd
This week we will construct rectangles from a given number and determine the perimeter. We can use the story: “I am PA” to review the difference between area and perimeter (located in Wanda’s folder).
We are also using square units to determine the area. You may use grid paper to help the children understand it better.
Since there are no application problems for Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, Jenna typed up some problems from the problem sets to make card work. It is a great idea to place these on your shelves and assign on work plans.

2nd Grade
This week we will be working with coins and bills  and solving word problems involving  the total value of a group of coins. Students will also solve word problems involving different combinations of coins with the same total value.

Science:
This week we will be talking about how plants respond to different stimuli, specifically: heat, light, and gravity. There are some short videos and one worksheet included in the plans. Have the children write vocabulary words in journal so they can get used to the terms. We will talk about heat on day 1, light on day 2, and gravity on day 3. On day 4, we will review those 3 stimuli first and then read an article about how plants live and then complete the worksheet that goes with it. On day 5, there will be an experiment. Please make sure you have all materials needed for the experiment on Friday! Terri will pick up a bag of seeds this weekend.

Writing:
On Monday, we are going to read and model annotation using the article “How to save the Tiger” with the highest Lexile level. The children will provide details from the text to support their opinion.
On Tuesday, we will first model how to write a strong introduction using an opinion statement. The prompt is: “Do you think tigers will become extinct, or can they be saved?” Then the students will write their own introduction.
On Wednesday, we will model the 2nd paragraph, using the first reason and providing details for that reason as well as using transition words. Students will then write their own 2nd paragraph.
On Thursday, we will model writing the 3rd paragraph, providing 2nd reason.
On Friday, we model writing a conclusion by restating the opinion and reasons with the details.

Dates to Remeber:
Monday: Report cards Go Home
Friday: Vocabulary Test
