Course Description
This class will include the basic fundamentals necessary in making a flat two-dimensional piece of paper appear to contain depth or three-dimensional space. In addition to line and tonal drawing studies, students will also work with composition and color. Basic design principles will be developed through sketchbook assignments. Students will also spend class time evaluating and critiquing other students’ work. Every assignment will have specific objectives on which the student will be graded. The grade will be based on whether or not each of the specific requirements for the assignment was completed successfully. Each new skill requirement will be developed first in class in non-graded exercises. Students wanting to spend extra time on projects may come to the classroom after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Course Outline
Graded assignments will fall into the following categories:
Classroom drawing/painting projects
Most of these projects will take two weeks to complete. These drawings or paintings will be based on a still life setup in the classroom. Students who need extra time or wish to spend additional time on these projects may wish to work in the classroom on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until five. No late work is accepted so students should plan their work accordingly.
Sketchbook design assignments
Students will be completing most of their sketchbook assignments as homework. These sketchbook assignments will consist of designing the background of the pages themselves and adding the written as well as visual content to the pages. Each assigned page in the sketchbook will have a specific topic.
Written and verbal Critiques
Students are going to be asked to write and talk about art. Some of these oral and written critiques will be graded.
